In 1987 this,the only standard gauge rack railway in Austria,was dieselized and partially closed but the

historical BAHNORAMA documentary makes it come to life again.

Stunning pictures show the movement of iron ore by class 197 steam rack and adheasion locomotives.

At the beginning of the 1940s the Erzberg was of considerable strategic importance to the war industry

of the 3rd Reich, which had annexed Austria in 1938. A very interesting film, made by the German Propaganda

Ministry, throws light on a dark part of the history of this railway. The BAHNORAMA Documentary about the Erzberg railway

also includes a trial of a Diesel Rack Locomotive and an impressive journey in a diesel railcar,a run made specially

for the Iron Ore Museum. There is also a conducted tour of the now abandoned and preserved iron ore workings.
