The Schneeberg Railway

The start of our journey up to the Schneeberg is romantic. Destroyed locos haul our train to the foot of the mountain and its rack railway. These dimensions are two class 52 Kriegslocks working doubleheaded.

The Schneeberg Railway has been steam operated since its opening in 1857. This line, just a few km south of vienna, is now the longest rack railway in Austria.

Our BAHNORAMA excursion train is headed ba class 2045 Diesel Locomotive.

Our BAHNORAMA camera crew has done justice to this charming line with their splendid pictures. Although the points had been set for the railways of the 20th century the little rack line stead fastly remains wedded to steam, simple, practical and yet romantic.
