The Wachau has to be seen in all its many guises, but it must be actually experienced and has to be discovered by train.
The silver ribbon of the river winds its way down the 33 km long narrows between Melk and Krems. It literally cuts through the Bohemian Granite Plateau.
Men settled here a long time, inhabiting the Danube's fertile shores since paläolytic times.
The Wachau Railway was Austria's first line to be equiped with the then brand-new central control system. Red and white Diesel electric and Diesel hydraulic locos, class 2043 and 2143 are ply on this line. Diesel railcars class 5047 abound.
The rail trip through the Wachau is a wonderful journey. The Wachau has to be seen in its many guises to be believed. But it must be experienced by all the senses:
